Butane And Me
Well, as you can see I haven’t been adding new things lately. I have been creating my own silver jewelry, instead. It has been a real experience, but a vey fulfilling one.
I first sat down and watched every video I could on the process of firing the silver. Then I purchased my materials, which included a butane torch, goggles, a firing stone, and a hammer. Now those are some tools that can make a person feel very powerful! I’m glad a jack-hammer wasn’t included in my necessities list!
I was so excited as I formed my work, anticipation of creating my own piece of jewelry with my actual signature on it was kind of an out of body experience for me. I stood there, torch in hand, clicking the automatic start switch, but nothing happened. No flame, nothing. So I enlisted my husband, who was telling me not to ruin his weekend by making him take me to the hospital for third degree burns. Such support, that’s why I love him so much.
So, now with my torch lit, I placed my piece of silver clay on the brick and begin the back and forth motion of heating the clay. It seemed like forever, but actually it was only about fifteen minutes, and poof, it went up in an orange flame and there sat my handmade silver pendant. So enthralled with the vision of silver in front of me that I had actually created, I forgot to turn off the butane flame. Within a few seconds my poor pendant was a glob of silver with a big whole in the middle. My first piece was a disaster! I almost threw in the towel; but I didn’t, and my next pendant turned out awesome. As soon as I can get a picture up of both of them I will…my computer with my website creation pages crashed and is getting repaired.
Anyway…I am excited to bring my own signature silver, which is 99.9% fine silver to Laura’s Locket. Hopefully, I won’t blow myself up in the process!
